ONLINE FEE SAVINGS

Online filing can also reduce government fees.

Under the fee-revision proposal provided, online applications for change or renewal of status of residence are set lower than counter applications for periods over 3 months. If implemented as proposed, the saving would be ¥3,000 to ¥10,000 per application, with the largest difference for a period of 5 years or more.

QAre online applications reviewed more slowly?

Based on our handled-case data, we have not found a consistent review-speed difference between online and counter applications. Processing time varies by case type, timing, additional-document requests and the reviewing section; in practice, there can also be an element of luck. We therefore focus on preparing and filing a complete application quickly rather than assuming one filing channel is faster.
